The Duo Plumber was not born in a boardroom. It started in a cold garage in Hamilton, Ontario, on a January night that neither of our founders will ever forget.
Marcus and Chris had been best friends since trade school. They had trained together, earned their licences together, and spent nearly a decade working for the same plumbing company, a company that was perfectly fine with sending homeowners to voicemail at midnight and charging surprise fees once the work was done.
That January night, Marcus got a call from his mother. A pipe had burst in her basement. Water was spreading fast. She had already called three companies. Not one picked up.
Marcus drove to her house himself, tools in the back of his truck, and fixed it in two hours. On the drive home, somewhere around 3 a.m. with frozen hands and a clear head, he called Chris.
"We can do this better," he said.
"I know we can," Chris replied.
The Duo Is Born
They registered The Duo Plumber the following spring. The name was simple and deliberate. Two people. Two values. Speed and honesty. That was the whole idea.
They started taking calls themselves, both of them, around the clock. One covered nights while the other slept, and they swapped the next day. For the first eighteen months it was just Marcus and Chris, two trucks, and a phone number they answered every single time it rang.
